August 2017 Study Group: Closet/Wardrobe

In our August 2017 Study Group, we are going to take a look at “closet/wardrobe” as a symbol. Sally Chan will present how the symbol of closet/wardrobe is being used in the sand trays.

Closet/wardrobe is not only a repository for valuables but also useless stuffs. It is a metaphor for the space of mind. Symbolically it holds one’s memories/secrets, and also buries things from one’s life. It is commonly used as a symbol of a negative stifling attachment to privacy, especially since the late 1960s, it is a marker of shameful secrets about one’s sexuality. How the closet/wardrobe symbolizes in sand trays? We are going to explore this symbol and will have sandplay case presentation to illustrate it.
